Changes to local government funding mean Westminster City Council says it will receive around £100 million less in government grant funding, phased over the next four years. Alongside rising costs and demand for services, the council currently estimates a £160 million budget gap.
We support fair funding for communities across the country. But levelling up one community should not mean levelling down another.
Westminster is home to enormous wealth, but also significant inequality, homelessness and housing need. Our council also provides services and infrastructure in a city used by hundreds of thousands of workers and visitors every day.
Residents should not be forced to choose between unaffordable council tax rises and losing the services our communities depend upon.
We call on the Government to ensure Westminster receives a fair and sustainable funding settlement, and on Westminster City Council to protect essential frontline services, particularly those relied upon by vulnerable and low-income residents.
